It’s hard to comprehend just how gigantic a display with ‘78% more display area than the iPad Air 2’ is, so developer Dennis Munsie put it into the perspective by showing that there’s actually more pixels inbetween the iPad Pro’s app icons, than there are on the entire display of the original iPhone.

In a new report from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP), the research firm claims that Apple’s giant-sized tablet performed impressively over the all-important December quarter, despite its high price point.

CIRP says that the iPad Pro had a strong launch by capturing a “meaningful share” of Apple’s tablet market, with 12 percent of all iPads sold being the iPad Pro.

The December quarter also indicated another change for iPad sales, with iPad mini models taking over from the iPad Air for the first time as Apple’s top-selling category of iPad. CIRP’s figures suggest that all combined models of iPad mini made up 47 percent of iPad sales in the quarter, compared to 40 percent for iPad Air models. In the December 2014 quarter, iPad mini models made up just 32 percent of sales.

“For the first time, iPad mini format had a greater share of sales than the iPad Air format,” said Mike Levin, Partner and Co-Founder of CIRP. “iPad mini did much better in the quarter than it did a year ago, in part because of the lower price points along with holiday price promotions, and because of the different models available.”

Other CIRP findings suggest that the total share of new iPhone 6s models fell below the share of the then-new phones in 2014, while the large-format iPhone 6s Plus share of sales also dropped compared to the iPhone 6 Plus. Customers continue to choose the year-old iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, and even the two-year old iPhone 5s, CIRP notes.

Of course, we won’t know exact figures until Apple releases its quarterly earnings. CIRP’s number may hint at larger macro trends, but they are still based on a relatively small survey of only 500 U.S. Apple customers, surveyed from December 26, 2015 to January 12, 2016.

Still, at least as far as the iPad Pro goes, it seems Apple may have a hit on its hands. The only question will be whether it’s enough to reverse the downward trend of Apple’s slowing iPad business.

With no word in sight on when it will be enabled in the official app, multiple others have offered up their own solutions on a YouTube and PIP feature. CornerTube’s lightweight app has taken that a step further, all the while looking to make the video watching experience faster. The app focuses on getting the user into watching the video they want, without trying to be a full-blown YouTube replacement app. The Today Widget captures any copied YouTube link from the clipboard and places it into your Notification Center, and the Action extension allows you to launch directly into a video from a YouTube link. These are really great when browsing through your Twitter feed when you want to hop right into watching the latest discovered video without leaving the app you’re already using.

In lab conditions, researchers this past February were able to achieve Li-Fi speeds of 224 gigabits per second, fast enough to download multiple HD movies in less than two seconds.

DON’T MISS: Android fan confesses all the things he likes better about iOS

While Li-Fi still remains something of an experimental technology, iOS 9’s references to the blazing fast data transfer technology are certainly intriguing. The iOS 9 code below was originally discovered by iOS jailbreaker Chase Fromm and relayed by AppleInsider earlier today.
Is this likely to be a feature with the iPhone 7? Not a chance. As it stands today, Li-Fi, despite its promises of speed, is still plagued with a number of limitations. At a base level, it can’t work through walls because, well, visible light can’t travel through walls. In this respect, Wi-Fi has a huge practical advantage. Not only that, but a Li-Fi enabled device needs to have a direct line of sight to an operational light sensor to operate. This operational limitation, however, does make Li-Fi a more secure transfer protocol than Wi-Fi. Today, Li-Fi is far from being a true Wi-Fi replacement, but it’s not out of the realm of comprehension that Li-Fi, in the future, may dutifully serve as a Wi-Fi supplement.

More broadly, the Li-Fi references in iOS 9 certainly affirm that Apple remains dedicated to exploring next-gen technologies for future use. Of course, the fact that Apple is already looking into Li-Fi shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. If we go back in time a bit, you might remember that Apple, with the original iBook in 1999, was the first company to ever release a laptop with built-in Wi-Fi.

For more information about Li-Fi, University of Edinburgh Professor Harald Hass in 2011 gave a TED talk on the technology he invented.

“All we need to do is fit a small microchip to every potential illumination device and this would then combine two basic functionalities, illumination and wireless data transmission,” Haas explained. “In the future we will not only have 14 billion light bulbs, we may have 14 billion Li-Fis deployed worldwide for a cleaner, greener and even brighter future.”
